We are so excited to announce that this year we have two ambassadors for the 2024 Bobbin Head Cycle Classic!
Rupert, a highly respected sports journalist, author and cyclist and John, a local cyclist who has many years experience racing (and placing) in some of the best cycling events around the world.
Meet John:
As a local cyclist, I know both Bobbin Head and Akuna Bay/West Head well and have lost count of the number of times I’ve ridden them over the years. My involvement in cycling began many years ago, having to ride to and from school through narrow English country lanes, on my trusty Lincoln Imp racing bike and praying the thin tyres would handle the “black ice” on the road, in the depths of winter. When I got back to cycling about 20 years ago, it was initially hill repeats up and down Bobbin Head, but pretty soon I couldn’t resist having a go at the Waratah Masters road races out at Homebush, and later at many events with the Peloton Sports Club.
Looking back, it was exciting to chalk up some success at road racing and TTs, at various levels, from Club to State, National and even World Masters. The last few years saw me taking on some challenging rides at various Gran Fondos, both in Australia and Europe but the highlight in 2023 was being on the podium, twice, in the UCI World Masters in Scotland.
But back to Bobbin Head; the “Bobbo” has various courses to suit all abilities and the linking up of Bobbin Head and Akuna/West Head makes it a real classic. From the times I have done it, I know there’s great camaraderie along the courses and a real buzz at the finish. For the PB hunters, there is even a 4km timed section heading south from the bridge at Bobbin Head but always good to see youngsters having a go at their first cycling event.
Over the years, the Bobbo has drawn together an impressive list of sponsors. The main beneficiary is Lifeline but there are several other worthy charities that are supported by this event. Of course, it wouldn’t happen without the local Rotary Clubs and the army of volunteers. Everyone riding should check out Uncle Bob Elsworth’s excellent tips on group etiquette and ride safety on the Bobbo website.
I wish everyone a safe and enjoyable ride.
Meet Rupert:
Rupert, highly respected sports journalist, author and cyclist is Australia’s foremost ultra endurance athlete. His numerous rides include the Indi Pac from Fremantle to Sydney and the 3700 km ride from Darwin via Uluru to Adelaide. He regularly rides the gruelling Ride Across America. Rupert uses these platforms to heighten awareness and understanding of mental health and well being so its no surprise that he readily accepted Bobbo’s invitation to be their inaugural Ambassador, in the knowledge that Bobbo proceeds support Lifeline in delivering their essential counselling services.
“I hope my 35 year-plus experience as a sports journalist and book author, my sense of adventure to step out of the box and expose myself to vulnerability in various challenges and my commitment to delivering the message of the importance of mental health and wellbeing can contribute in some way to helping others. I urge you to register now for the Bobbo and enjoy this terrific event”
